Bridging the Gap: The Story Behind TeachersDoor

We started TeachersDoor after teaching in Asia showed us how different things really are over there. When we first went to teach abroad (2010!), we ran into plenty of surprises that weren't in any job listing - from unwritten rules about culture to strange admin decisions to a totally different way of running schools than what we knew back home. While we ultimately adapted and thrived, we witnessed many talented teachers struggle or leave due to misaligned expectations or inability to accept that they're not home anymore.

Finding reliable school information was nearly impossible when we first started teaching overseas. Job boards and recruitment agencies focused mainly on filling positions quickly, while school websites often provided minimal insight due to cultural differences in communication styles. Many Asian schools operate in what's termed a "high context" culture, where detailed information isn't typically shared upfront. Ask a direct question about accommodations, working conditions, or expectations, and you might hear, "You'll see when you get here!" This can be particularly challenging for Westerners, who prefer having comprehensive information before making major career moves.

TeachersDoor is our way of bridging this information gap. While other review sites exist, we focus on sharing authentic perspectives from educators currently working within these systems. As active teachers in Asia, we've experienced the confusion and adapted to the differences. Now, we want to help others navigate this unique and sometimes challenging landscape.

The new site may have a few rough spots as we work out the kinks. Let us know if something doesn't seem right - your insights will help shape this resource for teachers and potential teachers worldwide. We want to hear what would make it more useful for you.
